NUGGETS OF GOLD or CHOICE SCRIPTURES ON SELECTED SUBJECTS
By Homer Duncan
Missionary Crusader
INTRODUCTION TO FIRST EDITION (1953)
It is our prayer that this little booklet will be used to bring honor to “Him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in His own blood.” No attempt has been made to give all of the verses on any given subject. We trust that the ones listed will stimulate you to further Bible study. Jesus said, “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.”
May the saints of God be edified through the reading of these pages. May those who are dead in trespasses and sins be given eternal life? May each of us be prepared for the coming of Him whose coming draweth nigh.
INTRODUCTION TO SECOND EDITION (1969)
The second edition of NUGGETS OF GOLD contains more than twice as many verses as in the first printing. We believe that the Spirit of God guided us as we selected choice verses on the most vital subjects in the Word of God. These Scripture references will be of great help to you as you study any given subject. Since God’s Word is our food, just a simple reading of the Holy Scriptures brings blessing to our hearts. We should hide the Word of God in our heart by memorizing much of it. We must learn to stand on the promises of God. We must remember that if we fail to live and to practice what the Book teaches, we are deceiving ourselves (James 1:22).

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
8. HOW TO BE SAVED
A. BY BELIEVING ON THE LORD JESUS CHRIST
“He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God” (John 3:18).
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that believeth on me hath everlasting life” (John 6:47).

“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1).
“That if thou shall confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation” (Romans 10:9,10).
B. WHY WE CAN BE SAVED SIMPLY BY BELIEVING
“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him” (2 Corinthians 5:21).

C. SALVATION BY GRACE

10. IMPORTANCE OF GOOD WORKS
“Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God who worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure” (Phil. 2:12,13). “For this I also labor, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily” (Colossians 1:29).
“This is a faithful saying and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they who have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men” (Titus 3:8).

C. WE LIVE BY FAITH

If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him, For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the Just of the eyes, and the pride of life is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth forever” (1 John 2:15-17).
47. SEPARATION

“Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe” (Exodus 21:24,25).
“Think not that I am come to destroy the law or the prophets: I am not come to destroy but to fulfill, For verily I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever, therefore, shall break one of these least commandments and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:17-19).
“Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.

56. THE ARMOR OF GOD
“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the LORD, and in the power of his might.
“Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
“Wherefore, take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
“Stand, therefore, having your loins girded about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness.
“And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
“Above all, taking the shield of faith, with which ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;”

“Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them; for I, the LORD thy God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
“And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
“Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

“But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God; in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates;
“For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day; wherefore, the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
“Honor thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

“Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad; for great is your reward in heaven; for so persecuted they the prophets who were before you” (Matthew 5:3-12).
59. THE MAJESTY OF GOD
“Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and measured out heaven with the span, and measured the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?
“Who hath directed the Spirit of the LORD, or being his counselor, hath taught him?
“With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of justice, and taught him knowledge, and showed to him the way of understanding?
“Behold, the nations are like a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance; behold, he taketh up the coasts as a very little thing.
“And Lebanon is not sufficient to burn, nor its beasts sufficient for a burnt offering.
“All nations before him are as nothing; and they are counted to him less than nothing, and vanity.
“To whom, then, will ye liken God? Or what likeness will ye compare unto him?” (Isaiah 40:1 2-1 8).
60. COURAGE AND STEADFASTNESS

61. ISRAEL
A. THE BEGINNING OF THE NATION
“Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee:
“And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:
“And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed” (Genesis 12:1-3).
B. TO BE SCATTERED BECAUSE OF DISOBEDIENCE
“And the Lord shall scatter thee among all people, from the one end of the earth even unto the other; and there thou shalt serve other gods, which neither thou nor thy fathers have known, even wood and stone” (Deuteronomy 28:64).
C. ISRAEL WILL NOT BE DESTROYED
“For I am with thee, saith the Lord, to save thee: though I make a full end of all nations whither I have scattered thee, yet will I not make a full end of thee: but I will correct thee in measure, and will not leave thee altogether unpunished” (Jeremiah 30:1 1).
“Thus saith the LORD, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The LORD of hosts is his name: “If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the LORD, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me forever” (Jeremiah 31:35-36).
D. THE LORD JESUS CHRIST WILL REIGN OVER THE REGATHERED NATION
“That then the LORD thy God will turn thy captivity, and have compassion upon thee, and will return and gather thee from all the nations, whither the LORD thy God hath scattered thee” (Deuteronomy 30:3).
“Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.
“in his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.
” Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that they shall no more say, The LORD liveth, which brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt;
“But, The LORD liveth, which brought up and which led the seed of the house of Israel out of the north country, and from all countries whither I had driven them; and they shall dwell in their own land” (Jeremiah 23:5-8).
62. THE CHURCH
A. THE TRUE CHURCH, THE BODY OF CHRIST
“And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock, I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matthew 16:18).
“And hath put all things under his feet and gave him to be the head over all things to the church.
“Which is his body, the fullness of him that filleth all in all” (Ephesians 1:22-23).
“To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God” (Ephesians 3:1 0).
“That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish” (Ephesians 5:27).
B. THE LOCAL CHURCH
“And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church; but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as a heathen man and a tax collector” (Matthew 18:17).
“And so were the churches established in the faith, and increased in number daily” (Acts 16:5).

63. BAPTISM
A. WATER
“And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan.
“And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him” (Mark 1:9-10).
“And John also was baptizing in Enon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized” (John 3:23).

64. THE LORD’S SUPPER
“For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord’s death till he come. Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body” (1 Corinthians 11:23-29).
65. LIFE IN CHRIST
A. A RECOGNITION OF OUR DEPRAVITY IS THE PREREQUISITE FOR OUR ENTERING INTO LIFE IN CHRIST.

“For the indignation of the LORD is upon all nations, and his fury upon all their armies: he hath utterly destroyed them, he hath delivered them to the slaughter. Their slain also shall be cast out, and their stink shall come up out of their carcasses, and the mountains shall be melted with their blood” (Isaiah 34:2-3).
“Wherefore art thou red in thine apparel, and thy garments Re him that treadeth in the wine vat?

73. NEW HEAVEN, NEW EARTH
“For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind” (Isaiah 65:17).
“But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in which, the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
“Seeing then that these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
“Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
“Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
